How the Nursing Diversity Program Helped me Fulfill my Nursing Dreams

Hello readers! I am a nurse and would like to share with you my experience on how I became a nurse and what inspired me to pursue this career path. When I was growing up, I would only see my mother at night. She was also a nurse, working in the same hospital as I do now. Whenever I asked her what she did all day, she used to say “I help sick people and help them become well”. I always pictured her as a modern day super heroine who works by day and turns into a great mom by night.

That was pretty much what inspired me; I wanted to be just like my mother and do the things she did. In order to get better exposure and experience, my mother enrolled me in one of the diversity training programs that were offered by her hospital for the staff’s children. Out of hundreds of entries, I was one of the 15 people selected for this fellowship. It was one of my proudest achievements.

The fellowship was a six-week program and started with an orientation, phlebotomy classes and nursing orientation. Each fellow had their own individual mentor who guides them in their various classes throughout the program. We had to work in shifts, and every Friday we used sit with our mentors and be encouraged to speak freely and discuss our problems and experience. At the end of the fellowship, we had to give presentations in our graduation ceremony to share with the audience how the program had benefited us.

My mother was extremely proud when she heard my presentation and that I had decided to follow her career path in nursing. It was a wonderful experience, and for those who are searching for diversity training programs in nursing, be sure to send in your application soon for a better chance of enrollment and a good prospect of developing a nursing career.

Create Equality with Diversity Programs in the Workplace

Our exposure has increased and so has our knowledge. We are dealing with new age technology and new infrastructure. So why is there still a hitch when it comes to accepting people from diverse backgrounds who share different thoughts, values and experiences? I am only referring to a certain group of people here and my discussion is not intended to hurt anybody’s feelings or backgrounds. In fact, I respect everyone and the backgrounds they come from and expect people to do the same for me and for everyone else.

The idea of introducing workforce diversity programs is to bring together individuals of all backgrounds and develop a sense of acceptance and embrace each other’s cultures. Today’s work place is a mixing pot of diversity and it is important for employees to work together to for the betterment of the future.  It is important to maintain a level of tolerance to prevent sudden outbursts to recognize the values of a person and maintaining an organization’s reputation, too.

With the aid of these programs, an organization plans to improve its performance and should follow the three golden rules to keep peace and understanding.  Diversity should be part of a business’ strategy so that no one can escape it and everybody is working together for a common good.  Employees should be encouraged to learn about each other’s lifestyles and cultures and the organization should ensure that leaders are on par with the company’s values.

In today’s context, it is important to embrace values, personal expression and incorporate similarities and dissimilarities so that the employees become more receptive and adjust themselves in various work places. An organization will only be successful when there is well maintained diversity in workplace and that can be achieved through conducting workforce diversity programs for better understanding of work culture and acceptance of diverse people and their backgrounds and cultures.

Enriching Minority Youth through Interactive Scholarship Programs

Upon returning home from school one day, my sister proudly told us that she had just received a scholarship from a well known Massachusetts institute. We were extremely proud of her and were very excited about this scholarship program she got selected for. Getting a scholarship is indeed a big deal and for someone of her age it was indeed the biggest deal.

She had enrolled in a youth scholarship program that provided interactive learning experience for children of diverse backgrounds. Tailored for the children of the staff, this program runs for six weeks from the start date. The students are asked to write essays about environment, health issues, diversity or any issue they feel is in conflict and needs to be resolved. As a result, they also provide a viable path for students looking to change their own futures.

Conducted on weekends, this program offers classes in CPR, First Aid, computer skills and nutrition and healthy eating. They also provide the students an exposure to the hospital settings such as the simulation lab, Pathology labs, Chemistry labs etcetera, so that they generate the interest in the students to pursue their career in healthcare. It is an enriching experience for them as through these programs they are exposed to the practical life and also develop confidence to decide on their career.

Also a part of the scholarship program, the staff members mentor these middle school students during their scholarship tenure in various facets of healthcare. Students develop self-confidence and are given the opportunity to understand the contributions that the institute makes towards the field of healthcare.

The importance of empowering minority children to create a future for themselves and living up to their potential so that they rise successfully and are promising in their respective careers is what is imbibed through the youth scholarship program. This experience helped my sister develop a sense of responsibility and courtesy of the program; she has decided to pursue her future career in nursing.
